The food industry is the backbone of many countries within the North Sea region. Many larger companies have been producing their goods for decades and export them to many other countries. On the other hand, there is a large number of small and medium size enterprises who deliver interesting products for their own region. In total, 18% of the economic activity in the North Sea region is performed in the food sector. The current industry is faced with intensified competition due to the effects of globalization and new entrants to the European Union.

The growing demand for sustainable and safe food is providing huge opportunities, combined with food trends like organic foods, functional foods it serves a playground for collaborate innovation. The aim of North Sea Supply Connect is to create partnerships between SME's and suppliers in the food sector, thereby facilitating SME's access to large procurement and improving SME's capacity to participate in tendering - mainly in upcoming markets
